What the Company Register Shows About Latvia's Startups

· 5 min read

Every organisation on this map is matched against the Latvian company register, the Uzņēmumu reģistrs, before it is published. Not the name a company uses on LinkedIn: the registered legal name, the registration number, the registered address, and the date the entity was created. That is what puts a pin in the right doorway instead of somewhere in the middle of the city.

Reconciling 634 records against 487,808 register rows turns up things that are hard to see one company at a time.

What Does the Latvian Company Register Show About Startups?

Matched against the Uzņēmumu reģistrs, a third of the startups on this map are registered outside Riga, about half were founded in the last six years, some marked terminated are still trading through a foreign holding company, and only a handful publish a job board a machine can read.

How Many Latvian Startups Are Actually in Riga?

424 of the 634 organisations here have a registered address in Riga, and the other 210 are elsewhere in Latvia. The largest cluster outside the city is Mārupe, the municipality wrapped around the airport, followed by Jūrmala, Liepāja, and Ogre.

Mārupe is not a surprise once you look at a map: it has quietly become where companies go when they need floor space and a loading bay.

This is the reason the map covers the whole country rather than the city it is named after. A directory that stopped at the Riga boundary would be missing a third of the ecosystem, including some of the companies with the most physical operations.

Where in Riga Are Startups Located?

Riga's startups sit across 42 neighbourhoods. Centrs has the most by a distance, more than twice the next area, but Latgale, Avoti, Skanste, Teika, Āgenskalns, and Purvciems all carry real numbers, and there is no single startup street. For a coworking desk near other founders, Skanste and Centrs are the safe bets.

Centrs leading is what you would expect from the district that holds most of the offices, and plenty of neighbourhoods have two or three companies. If you are looking for the ecosystem rather than a desk, it is distributed across the city in a way that no one venue represents.

How Old Are the Startups in Latvia?

Young. Roughly half of the companies on this map were founded in the last six years, a substantial number in the last two, and fewer than thirty predate 2010. Companies at this age change address, change name, and occasionally stop, which is why the register match is re-run weekly rather than treated as a one-time import.

That shapes what is useful. A directory of a mature ecosystem is a reference work; a directory of a young one is closer to a census that has to be retaken.

Why Are Some Active Startups Marked Terminated in the Latvian Register?

Twenty of the published companies are marked terminated in the Latvian register while still trading. A company that raises money abroad often moves its operating entity to a UK or Estonian holding company, and the Latvian entity is wound up while the team, the product, and the customers carry on exactly as before.

Edurio is the clearest example: the Latvian entity is closed, the company is not.

So the register fact and the editorial fact are shown separately here. A listing can say "terminated in the Latvian register" without saying "closed", because those are different claims and only one of them is ours to make.

How Many Latvian Startups Publish Jobs a Machine Can Read?

Very few. There are 96 open roles on this map, from 9 companies, because most Latvian startups post roles on LinkedIn, a hand-built careers page, or a Telegram group. Only a small minority use an applicant tracking system that publishes a structured feed, such as Workable, Teamtailor, Greenhouse, Lever, Recruitee, Ashby, Personio, or SmartRecruiters.

That is not because the rest are not hiring. They are.

This is a genuine gap in the ecosystem's tooling, and it has a cost that is easy to miss. A role that only exists on LinkedIn is visible to people already following that company. A role on a structured board is visible to every aggregator, every job map, and every person who searches. For a country competing for a small pool of senior engineers, that is not a small difference.

What Can the Public Record Not Tell You About a Startup?

What it does. 364 of the 634 listings have no description, because public data gives a registration number, an address, a founding date, and a sector with high confidence, but not the one sentence that says what a company actually does.

Not for want of trying. Homepages say "transforming the future of X", and automated extraction over two rounds moved that number by six.

That sentence has to come from the company. It is the whole reason a listing can be claimed: the person who works there can write in thirty seconds what no amount of scraping produces.

If one of them is yours, the listing is already there, already verified against the register, and waiting for the sentence only you can write.

Frequently Asked Questions

How Is a Startup Matched to the Latvian Company Register?

Every organisation is matched on its registered legal name, registration number, registered address, and the date the entity was created, rather than the name it uses on LinkedIn. That puts its pin in the right doorway, and the match is re-run weekly.

What Is the Uzņēmumu Reģistrs?

The Uzņēmumu reģistrs is the Register of Enterprises of the Republic of Latvia, the official company register. This map reconciled its records against 487,808 register rows to check each company's legal name, number, address, and founding date.

Does Terminated in the Latvian Register Mean a Startup Has Closed?

Not necessarily. A listing can say terminated in the Latvian register without saying closed, because the Latvian entity is often wound up after operations move to a foreign holding company while the team, the product, and the customers carry on.

Why Does This Map Cover All of Latvia Rather Than Only Riga?

Because a third of the companies are registered outside Riga. A directory that stopped at the city boundary would miss that third, including the cluster in Mārupe around the airport and some of the companies with the most physical operations.

How Can a Company Add a Description to Its Listing?

By claiming it. The listing is already verified against the register, and the person who works at the company can write the one sentence saying what it does, which no amount of automated extraction produces.
