Latvia issues a long-stay visa to people who work remotely for an employer registered in another OECD member state, or who are self-employed and registered in one. It runs for up to 1 year and can be followed by one more of the same length.
The Latvian Digital Nomad Visa, and Working Remotely From Riga

The income test is a multiple rather than a fixed sum: 2.5 times the previous year's average gross monthly wage. The migration office publishes the figure it applies, currently EUR 4,213 a month, and that published figure is the one to plan against rather than your own arithmetic.
It is not a founder's route and it is not a residence permit. It carries no right to work in Latvia at all, which is the detail that decides whether it fits you.
This states the rules with a link to each. It is written for someone deciding whether to live in Riga while their income stays somewhere else. It is not advice, and an application turns on documents rather than on a summary. Founders building a company in Latvia want the startup visa instead, and employees of a Latvian company want the non-EU hiring guide.
What Is the Latvian Digital Nomad Visa?
A national long-stay visa for remote work. It is open to a foreigner whose purpose in Latvia is to work remotely for an employer registered in another OECD member state, or as a self-employed person registered in one. It is a visa, not a residence permit.
The ground sits in the Immigration Law alongside the other purposes of entry, and the practical rules are published by the migration office, the Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs. Latvia does not brand it as a digital nomad visa in its own statutes; the law describes remote work and an OECD-registered employer, which is what the label is shorthand for.
Two consequences follow from it being a visa rather than a permit.
- It has a fixed ceiling. A residence permit can be renewed on its own terms; this cannot, beyond the single further visa below.
- The OECD link is structural, not incidental. The employer or the self-employment registration has to sit in an OECD state, so the question is where your income is registered rather than where you hold a passport.
Who Can Apply for Latvia's Remote Work Visa?
Someone employed by an employer registered in an OECD member state, or self-employed and registered in one, who can perform the work remotely. Applicants must also show income at the statutory multiple and have held that employment or self-employment for the preceding six months.
The six months of history is the requirement that most often disqualifies an otherwise eligible applicant. Someone who has just gone freelance, or just switched employer, has the right kind of income and not yet the record of it.
The documents follow from that. An employee brings confirmation of current employment from the tax administration or social insurance institution of the OECD state, along with evidence of the income level and of being able to work remotely. A self-employed person brings a document from the tax administration of an OECD state certifying income over the last six months.
How Much Do You Need to Earn for the Latvian Nomad Visa?
2.5 times the average gross monthly wage of employees in the previous year. The migration office applies a published figure rather than asking you to compute one, and the figure it currently publishes is EUR 4,213 a month a month.
This is worth being precise about, because the rule and the number can drift apart. The multiple is fixed; the base moves when the statistics office publishes a new annual average, and the migration office's published figure follows that release rather than leading it.
The practical instruction is to read the figure off the migration office's own page at the time you apply, and not to derive it yourself from whatever average wage you last saw quoted. A number you calculated and a number the office applies are different things, and only one of them decides the application.
For a self-employed applicant the same threshold is tested against income over the previous six months rather than against a current salary, which for lumpy freelance income is a materially harder test to pass.
How Long Does the Latvian Nomad Visa Last?
Up to 1 year, and after it you may receive one further long-stay visa of up to the same length. That is the ceiling on this route: two years in total, and the second visa is a possibility rather than an entitlement.
The law provides a way to continue past it without leaving. Before the visa expires, the holder may request a temporary residence permit from inside Latvia, and the residence permit is then governed by its own rules rather than by this ground.
That is the step to plan for rather than to discover. Someone who treats the second year as the end of the question and then wants to stay is making a decision late, on a different legal basis, with the clock already running.
What Happens After the Second Visa Expires?
A wait. Once the repeat visa has run out, the holder may not receive a new long-stay visa in Latvia on the same ground for 6 months. The route closes for that period rather than resetting, which is the part people are surprised by.
It is a deliberate design. The visa exists for a stay of up to two years, and the bar stops it being renewed indefinitely by reapplying from scratch. Anyone whose plan is to live in Riga for longer than that should be looking at the residence permit route from the beginning.
Can You Work for a Latvian Company on This Visa?
No. Remote work visa holders have no right to employment in Latvia, and the migration office states it plainly. The visa permits you to be in Latvia while working for the OECD-registered employer or self-employment that justified it, and nothing else.
This is the line that decides whether the visa fits a founder. If you intend to form a Latvian company and work in it, or to take a job at one, this is the wrong route and the application would be built on a purpose you do not have.
- Building a company here points at the startup visa, which has its own conditions and its own restrictions on other income.
- Taking a job at a Latvian company points at an employment permit or an EU Blue Card, both covered in the non-EU hiring guide.
- Owning a Latvian company without living here needs no permit at all, which the registration guide covers.
How Does This Compare With the Latvian Startup Visa?
They answer opposite questions. The nomad visa is for income that stays abroad while you live in Riga; the startup visa is for building a company here and drawing your living from it. One of them forbids working in Latvia outright, and the other exists precisely so that you can.
| Remote work visa | Startup visa | |
|---|---|---|
| Your income comes from | an OECD-registered employer or self-employment | the company you are building here |
| Work in Latvia | not permitted | that is the point of it |
| Maximum term | 1 year, plus one more | renewable on its own terms |
| Tested on | income at 2.5 times the average wage | the venture and the team |
The startup visa guide lists three alternatives to itself and this is a fourth, for the specific reader it turns away: someone who needs to keep earning from existing clients or an existing employer while they are here.
Does the Nomad Visa Make You a Latvian Tax Resident?
Being in Latvia can make you tax resident regardless of which document let you in, and immigration status and tax residence are decided by different rules. Time spent in the country is the test that matters, and this visa contemplates a stay long enough to cross it.
That is a genuine cost to weigh rather than a footnote, and it is the question this page is least able to answer for you, because it depends on the other country as much as on Latvia. The relocation checklist sets out when Latvian residence begins.
Two years of living somewhere is long enough that the answer matters, and the right time to ask a tax adviser about it is before the first visa rather than during the second.
Frequently Asked Questions
Who is eligible for the Latvian digital nomad visa?
Someone working remotely for an employer registered in an OECD member state, or self-employed and registered in one, who has held that arrangement for the previous six months and can show income at the required level. The employer's registration matters rather than the applicant's nationality.
How much income does the Latvian remote work visa require?
2.5 times the previous year's average gross monthly wage. The migration office publishes the figure it applies, currently EUR 4,213 a month a month, and that published figure governs. Read it from the office's own page when you apply rather than calculating it from an average wage you have seen quoted elsewhere.
How long can you stay in Latvia on a digital nomad visa?
Up to 1 year, followed by one further visa of up to the same length, so two years in total. Before a visa expires you may request a temporary residence permit from inside Latvia, which is the route for anyone intending to stay beyond the ceiling.
Can you take a job in Latvia on the remote work visa?
No. The visa carries no right to employment in Latvia. It permits you to live here while working for the OECD-registered employer or self-employment that supported the application. Working for a Latvian company needs an employment permit or an EU Blue Card instead.
Can you reapply after the Latvian nomad visa runs out?
Not immediately. After the second visa expires you may not receive a new long-stay visa on the same ground for 6 months. The route is built for a stay of about two years, so anyone planning longer should be looking at a residence permit from the start.
